Startup Jalsa is a brainchild of The Ideaz Factory. In conferences, the only thing one ends up with is a bunch of visiting cards and no real-meaning conversations. That’s what we wanted to change and we began on a mission to provide aspiring founders a solid support system to start their journeys. Over 1500 founders, and 70+ speakers participated in 3 years.
Khopchas, our unique spaces for one-on-one interaction are super hit among the startups because those 30 minutes of uninterrupted talk with the investor is all a startup needs. 500 meetings in Khopchas lead to almost 18,000 minutes of conversations with 50+ mentors and 1000+ participants.
We started small in Chandigarh introducing the novelty of Khopchas in the ecosystem leading a change in the way conferences are held. Hosting over 700+ founders and 30+ speakers then, it was the first time ever that a conference of this scale was organized in a Tier 2 city. Legendary founder Ronnie Screwvala of UTV and Yogesh Kumar – the man behind Tejas, India’s First Indigenous Aircraft saw potential in Jalsa being a launch pad for the future technologies.
“Besharam ban jaoge toh entrepreneur ban jaoge”. These words were said at Jalsa 2016 and we just couldn’t agree more. Sh. Vipul Goel, Minister of Industries and Commerce, Govt of Haryana, inaugurated the conference and announced the Startup policy of Haryana. As panelists, Annu Grover, Founder of Nurturing Green, and Pradeep Gidwani, the beer man of India and Founder of The Pint Room, talked about failures before success and getting the business going.
The theme ran across startups getting funding ready and so we went on a journey to 8 cities pan India to select and mentor the best ideas. Top-notch educational institutions, incubators and accelerators in Chennai, Pune, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Delhi became part of our roadshow. For the finale, we moved to Lake Club in Chandigarh which has the benefit of undistracted attention for full 2 days. A silent conference was organized this year, the impact of which was loud for the Indian ecosystem.
Arvind R Vohra, Executive Director, Gionee India, rightly said you don’t get what you deserve, you get what you negotiate. Bollywood singer Rabbi Shergill & Sahil Khattar, host of BeingIndian, talked about technology making things work for us. Anuj Aggarwal of Altruist Technologies, Gaurav Kachru of 5ideas Startup Superfuel led interesting panels. 50+ startups from hardware, education, immersive tech space participated in the finale where two of the most innovative ideas in e-commerce and green sector won Rs 1 crore and Rs 10 lac funding.
In addition, Ecell IIT Madras co-presented an E-cell MasterClass at Startup Jalsa fusing mentorship with competitive spirit to provide E-cells with the necessary skills. It was held with support from Ecells of IIT Madras, IIT Roorkee, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur and Bits Pilani.
2018 – Vision for Dharamshala
Having a successful run for over 3 years, we have our eyes set on Dharamshala for the next big conference. Keeping in sync with our aim to give Tier 2 community, a platform for good connections for one long weekend, we would have a mini startup ecosystem in Dharamshala, Q&As with leading entrepreneurs of India, panel discussions and more.
